BioEthanol Industry Status in Canada

Canada is poised to become the world’s largest producer of wheat ethanol based on recent and projected rates of growth in the industry. Canadian wheat based ethanol production is based in Western Canada and our corn based ethanol industry is based in Central Canada.

For a complete listing of all Canadian ethanol plants, please refer to the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association website.

In Saskatchewan, three existing ethanol plants produce close to 345M litres of ethanol per year, and the volume of wheat DDGS available for commercial sale is approximately 300,000 metric tonnes.

Global Wheat Ethanol Production

Wheat ethanol is also produced in several countries in the European Union (EU). Diesel fuel use in the EU is much more prevalent than gasoline use and has resulted in proportionally more emphasis on biodiesel compared to North America. However, demand for ethanol is growing. The European Commission has set a 5.75% biofuel share target by 2010 and 10% by 2020. This will require that EU states to support the growth and development of the biofuel production industry. In 2006, the total ethanol production capacity from various types of feedstock was 3,206 million litres. The contribution of ethanol produced from wheat to the total EU production is summarized in the table below.
